Frequently Asked Questions

I live in California, but am affiliated with an agency outside of California. Can they still sponsor me as a Fellow?

No, they would not be able to serve as your sponsor. All agencies that sponsor a fellow must be located within the state of California. Because our centers are located in San Francisco and Los Angeles, and Fellows are expected to spend time at our centers, fellows must also be within travel distance of these locations.

Must Fellows be employed by the sponsoring agency? Can they be otherwise affiliated as CAB members or volunteers?

No, Fellows do not have to be employees of the Sponsoring Agency. If a Fellow is not an employee of the Sponsoring Agency, we will require the Sponsoring Agency and Fellow to reach a formal arrangement allowing the Fellow to be compensated for their time spent on the Fellowship (e.g. via a monthly stipend). However, it should be noted that preference may be given to individuals that are employed by the agency. This is in recognition that employment by the Sponsoring Agency may offer increased opportunities for the transfer of knowledge and capacity from the Fellow to the agency.

If I leave my position at the Sponsoring Agency, can I continue to be a Fellow?

No. While the Fellowship is granted based on the strength of the Fellow and the support of the Sponsoring Agency, the underlying agreement is between the CHPRCs and the Sponsoring Agency. For this reason, the Fellowship cannot follow the Fellow.

I am the Executive Director of my agency and would like to apply to be a Fellow. Do I still need to get a letter of support from someone within my agency?

Yes. If you are the Executive Director of your agency and wish to apply for the Fellowship, please submit a letter of support from the Chair of the agency’s Board of Directors. Please note, however, that this Policy Research Fellowship is intended to be an opportunity to learn basic policy research and analysis skills, thus, an Executive Director may not be the most appropriate candidate within the agency.

Will I have to pay my own travel costs if I am selected as a fellow?

Each sponsoring agency is given $1,000 per month for the 2-year fellowship term. Any expenses incurred by the fellow during the fellowship, including travel costs, should be paid for by the sponsoring agency with this monthly payment.

I am the Executive Director of my agency and would like to apply to be a fellow. Do I still need to get a letter of support from the ED of my agency (i.e., myself)?

If you are the Executive Director of your agency and wish to apply for the fellowship, please submit a letter of support from the Chair of the agency’s Board of Directors.

What if I live in California but don’t live near San Francisco or Los Angeles? Are commuting travel costs covered by the program?

Fellow’s participation in the program requires that a fellow reasonably be able to get to San Francisco or Los Angeles in person on a regular basis. Unfortunately, we cannot cover commuting costs.

What about other non-commute travel costs to complete fellowship-related activities?

Each sponsoring agency is given $1,000 per month for the 2-year Fellowship term. Unless otherwise noted, any expenses incurred by the Fellow during the Fellowship, including routine costs to commute to San Francisco or Los Angeles, would need to be paid by the Sponsoring Agency with this monthly payment. Non-routine fellowship-related travel costs (e.g., travel to another part of the state for a meeting associated with the work of the fellowship) will be covered by the center with which the fellow is affiliated.
